Moi University has received a generous donation of Sh6 million in digital audio-visual equipment from the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Donghua University. This donation is intended to establish two state-of-the-art smart classrooms, named “Shanghai Love Classroom,” at both its Mombasa campus and the main campus in Uasin Gishu County. The aim is to enhance distance learning capabilities for both institutions involved.
Enhancing Digital Education Through Smart Classrooms
During the launch event at Moi University’s Mombasa campus, Shang Yuying, Vice Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, highlighted the long-standing relationship between Donghua University and Moi University, which dates back to 1950. She emphasized the importance of smart classrooms in advancing digital education and acknowledged Moi University’s leadership in this field for over a decade.
Strengthening International Educational Collaboration
The donation underscores the ongoing collaboration between Chinese and Kenyan institutions. Since 2016, Moi University has partnered with various institutions globally to set up digital classrooms, including the Confucius Institute for textile engineering and fashion design established in 2015. Yuying expressed hope that the new equipment would further strengthen ties between China and Kenya and support deeper research and educational collaboration.
Benefits and Future Plans for Smart Classrooms
According to Prof. Isaac Kosgey, Vice-Chancellor of Moi University, the smart classrooms will significantly enhance both teaching and learning experiences for faculty and students. The university is committed to expanding its distance learning initiatives and plans to establish smart classrooms across all five campuses to meet the growing demand for virtual education.
Prof. Masibo Lumala, Director of the Institute of Open and Distance E-Learning at Moi University, noted the institution’s progressive approach to integrating technology into education. The expansion will include online examinations and community access to smart classrooms for various courses, including language programs like Chinese. These developments aim to support professionals in fields such as tourism and docking and extend educational opportunities to local communities.
