Ngara Girls’ High School

Ngara Girls’ High School

Ngara Girls’ High School, established in 1957 during the colonial era as an Asian mixed secondary school, underwent significant transformations over the years. Originally led by Mr. Waller, the school transitioned into its present-day form in 1962 when boys were relocated to Nairobi South ‘B’ to establish Highway Secondary School. In 1963, coinciding with Kenya’s independence, Mrs. Serah Joseph became the first lady headmistress, succeeded by Mrs. Reina D’Souza in 1964. The Ominde Commission’s 1964 reforms abolished racial education divisions, opening Ngara Girls’ High School to students of all races.

Despite this change, Asian heads continued to manage the school until 1987 when Mrs. Ottaro became the first African headmistress, succeeding Mrs. Vimala Chaudry. The initiative to transform the school from a day school to a boarding school gained traction in 1986. Renovations in 1986, prompted by the adoption of the 8-4-4 education system, converted classrooms into dormitories for Form Four girls. Mrs. Macharia, the principal at the time, played a pivotal role in this transformation, capitalizing on the groundwork laid by her predecessor, Mrs. Ottaro.

Fundraising efforts, including harambee contributions, raffle ticket sales, walks, and variety shows, were launched by parents, students, and teachers under Mrs. Macharia’s leadership. In 1996, with support from the Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF), a new hostel complex was initiated. The first phase accommodated Form 3 and 4 students, reducing the number of day scholars. However, challenges persisted, necessitating further fundraising for additional boarding facilities, a perimeter wall, and a generator.

In 2000, Mrs. Josephine Mwandoe took over as principal, prioritizing the completion of the hostel complex. A harambee in 2001 facilitated the construction of the remaining floors, making the school predominantly boarding. Challenges like student security and blackouts prompted additional fundraising for a perimeter wall and a generator. The completion of the hostel block in 2004 marked Ngara Girls’ High School’s transition to a full boarding school.

Under Mrs. Munyasya, who assumed leadership in January 2009, the school’s infrastructure underwent renovations, leading to improved academic standards. The school also boasts a clinic managed by a full-time nurse, fully equipped with necessary medical resources. Additionally, a computer laboratory, inaugurated in May 2007, provides students with valuable computer lessons, contributing to their academic growth. Overall, Ngara Girls’ High School has evolved into a dynamic institution, adapting to changing educational landscapes and continuously enhancing its facilities and academic offerings.
