Rongo University lays off 137 employees

As the institution undertakes restructuring, 137 lecturers and non-teaching personnel at Rongo University have been laid off.

According to Rongo University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Samuel Gudu, the move was compelled by lower capitation from the national government and a severe economic environment that has thrown the university into financial distress.

Prof. Gudu stated that capitation from the national government has been consistent over the last five years, despite the increased cost of administering the university during the same period.

He claimed that the decrease in the number of self-sponsored students since 2016 has caused financial difficulties.

Those who are laid off will be able to start their lives with some money.
