2024 Kcse Results Released Performance Highlights Gender Trends And Exam Insights

The Education Cabinet Secretary (CS), Julius Ogamba, has officially announced the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results. The release ceremony took place at Mitihani House, Nairobi, marking a significant milestone for the 962,512 candidates who sat for the exams that concluded on November 22, 2024.

Key Performance Highlights

  • Top Performers: Out of the total candidates, 1,693 achieved the prestigious A grade.
  • University Eligibility: 246,391 candidates attained a minimum university entry grade of C+ and above, a marked increase from 201,133 in 2023.
  • Gender Dynamics: Female candidates (482,202) outnumbered their male counterparts (480,312), reflecting a 7.19% rise in female participation.

Grading System and Academic Trends

The 2023 introduction of a revamped grading system has significantly impacted this year’s performance. The new system calculates the mean grade using two core subjects: Mathematics and one language (English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language). This contrasts with the previous system that required five subjects across three clusters.

Notably, 17 of the 30 subjects examined showed improved performance, including Mathematics, Sciences, and Business Studies. However, 10 subjects, such as English and Kiswahili, saw a decline. Female candidates excelled in seven subjects, including languages and Home Science, while males outperformed in 23 subjects like Mathematics and Physics.

Age and Participation Trends

  • Younger Candidates: A notable increase in candidates aged 16 and below was observed, rising from 16,040 in 2023 to 20,546 in 2024.
  • Appropriate Age Group: The majority (684,765) fell within the 17–19 age bracket.
  • Older Candidates: 259,861 candidates aged 20 and above also participated.

Challenges and Irregularities

Despite robust measures to prevent malpractice, the 2024 KCSE examinations faced several challenges:

  • Withheld Results: Results for 2,829 candidates were withheld pending investigations into irregularities.
  • Malpractice Cases: 91 teachers are under disciplinary action, with 840 results canceled due to confirmed irregularities.
  • Tragic Events: Some students tragically lost their lives during the exam period due to various causes.

Improved Examination Security

In a bid to combat cheating, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) introduced personalized exam papers with pre-printed candidate details. Additionally, special courts were established to handle malpractice cases. However, allegations of teachers aiding in cheating and poor compensation for exam officials highlighted ongoing challenges.

Government Remarks

Before the results announcement, CS Ogamba presented the report to President William Ruto at State House. President Ruto commended the progress in the education sector, emphasizing curriculum enrichment, increased teacher recruitment, and enhanced learning facilities.

2025 Exam Registration

KNEC CEO David Njengere announced key dates for the 2025 examinations:

  • KPSEA Registration: Begins January 27, 2025.
  • KCSE and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment: Commences February 17, 2025.

The 2024 KCSE results underscore significant strides and persistent challenges in Kenya’s education sector, reflecting the resilience and determination of learners and educators alike.
