Kenya Tackles Teacher Shortage: TSC to Recruit 20,000 Educators for Junior Secondary Schools
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya is taking significant steps to address the severe shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools by initiating the recruitment of 20,000 additional educators next month. TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia disclosed that the current deficit stands at 42,117 teachers, with the recent inclusion of a Grade 8 class further exacerbating the issue. This recruitment drive aims to alleviate the strain on the education system and ensure a more favorable student-to-teacher ratio.
During the Taxpayers Day celebrations in Mombasa, President William Ruto confirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the teacher shortage by allocating Sh19.7 billion to TSC for recruitment purposes. Under the Kenya Kwanza administration, the government has made commendable strides in tackling the shortage, employing 35,790 new teachers over the past year. This marks a significant departure from the previous administration’s approach, which hired approximately 5,000 teachers annually. The increased investment in recruiting teachers reflects a dedication to providing quality education and improving educational outcomes for students across Kenya.
