Knut Vows to Advocate for Reinstatement of Sacked JSS Teachers
Joseph Arasa, the Executive Secretary of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Masaba North Sub-branch, has affirmed the union’s commitment to defending Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) teachers who faced disciplinary action for their participation in a strike. He stated that KNUT will advocate with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for the reinstatement of some JSS teachers who were disciplined but did not comply with the directive to apologize.
Arasa noted that while many JSS teachers participated in the strike, those who expressed remorse have been reinstated and resumed their duties. However, those who remained defiant are now seeking assistance.
Expressing regret over the situation, Arasa highlighted that out of over 10,700 JSS teachers, 742 were removed from the TSC payroll due to their actions. He emphasized the importance of humility, stating that the union had cautioned teachers about the consequences of their actions but some disregarded these warnings.
“We warned them about the repercussions of their actions, but they disobeyed us. When given a chance to apologize to the employer, they refused, and now they are seeking our assistance,” Arasa remarked.
The secretary made these remarks during a ceremony at Eronge DEB Primary School in Kitutu Masaba Constituency, where he addressed parents, teachers, and students gathered for the retirement ceremony of Nyakoe on Monday, June 1st.
