The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) initiates an audit of the recent teacher promotions to uncover potential flaws in the process
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has commenced an audit of the recent promotions of 36,505 teachers, a process that has faced criticism for alleged irregularities. In a circular issued on March 6, 2024, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu directed all 110 KNUT Branch Executive Secretaries nationwide to compile data on the promotion status of teachers in their respective zones.
Oyuu instructed the executive secretaries to collect hard copy written complaints from affected teachers and submit the information to the union headquarters by March 11, 2024. The move comes in response to widespread concerns and complaints following the release of the promotion results. Oyuu emphasized the importance of addressing these issues promptly and urged executive secretaries to gather comprehensive data.
“We have noted with concerns that there is so much complaint on this issue after the release of the results. The purpose of this communication is to request you to compile data on the above issue as per Zone in your Branch,” stated Oyuu. “This information should reach the Head Office by Monday, March 11, 2024, before you proceed to the Nakuru meeting. In addition and most importantly, collect hard copy written complaints by the same teachers and forward to this office as confirmation of the same,” he added.
This communication follows KNUT’s previous criticism of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regarding the promotions. Oyuu expressed dissatisfaction with the process, particularly the publication of teachers’ TSC numbers without providing details on the number of promotions in each grade and region. The union has demanded immediate clarification and discussions to address the concerns raised by teachers.
