University That Granted Sudi’s Doctorate Under Investigation as DCI Arrests Officials for Fake Degrees

Northwestern Christian University, which conferred an honorary doctorate on Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi in December 2024, is now under intense scrutiny after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two top officials for allegedly running an illegal institution.
DCI Arrests University Officials at Graduation Ceremony
Detectives apprehended Chancellor Moses Masiga and Vice-Chancellor Jackson Khayamba during a graduation event at Wild Waters, Nyali, where they were reportedly caught issuing fake degrees from a non-accredited institution.
During the raid, authorities seized a trove of fraudulent academic documents, including honorary doctorate degrees, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, and other certificates meant for unsuspecting graduates.
The Commission for University Education (CUE) had previously blacklisted Northwestern Christian University in 2023 as one of 13 institutions illegally offering degrees in Kenya, warning the public against enrolling.
Sudi’s ‘Doctorate’ Sparks Controversy
Despite CUE’s warnings, MP Oscar Sudi received an honorary doctorate in Leadership, Administration, and Management from the institution. The same event also honored MPs John Waluke and Didmus Barasa.
Public skepticism intensified when the university referred to Sudi as an “engineer,” a title that requires rigorous academic and professional training. The Institution of Engineers of Kenya swiftly dismissed the claim, adding to the controversy.
Ongoing Investigations & Growing Concerns
As investigations deepen, questions arise over how the university continued awarding degrees despite clear warnings from regulators. Authorities are now cracking down on fraudulent academic institutions to protect the integrity of Kenya’s education system.
