KNUT Calls for Increased Teacher Recruitment in Special Schools
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is calling for the urgent assignment of more teachers to special schools nationwide. Koibatek/Mogotio Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Francis Bundotich highlighted the severe shortage of staff in these institutions amid increasing student enrollments.
Acute Shortage of Special Education Teachers
Bundotich pointed out that thousands of trained special education teachers remain unemployed despite the critical need. “Special schools in the country have been neglected for a long time. These schools grapple with understaffing, and we want to ask TSC to post teachers to these schools,” he said.
Violation of Learners’ Rights
Bundotich described the continued neglect of these institutions as a gross violation of the rights of special needs learners. He also addressed the inadequate infrastructure in these schools, urging both national and county governments to take swift action. “Most special schools lack adequate infrastructure for learners. Indeed, it has greatly inconvenienced our learners, making it hard for them to go about their day-to-day activities. We want to ask both levels of government to urgently address this problem,” added Bundotich.
Dire Need for Staff and Facilities
A spot check within the Rift Valley region revealed several special schools with over 400 learners and fewer than 10 teachers, underscoring the dire need for more staff and improved facilities.
