Vihiga County Commissioner Urges Smooth Transition for Learners and Addresses Social Issues
Vihiga County Commissioner Felix Watakila has urged parents and guardians to ensure a smooth transition for learners to the next classes, emphasizing the government’s policy of 100 percent transition for those who completed the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Watakila directed local Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to implement government policies effectively and expressed concern about child labor in urban areas, particularly children hawking in Luanda, Majengo, Mbale, and Chavakali townships.
To address this issue, he announced a joint operation with the police to apprehend child hawkers, placing them in police cells and charging their parents. Additionally, Watakila highlighted the prevalent problem of sexual abuse against teenage girls in the county, emphasizing a multisectoral approach to ensure perpetrators are held accountable. He called on residents to uphold societal moral codes for the common good and expressed concern about the high number of defilement cases reported to local administrators and police stations.
