AON Minet Medical Cover Controversy: Teachers Urged to Update Dependents Amid Contract Termination Concerns
AON Minet, a major medical service provider for over 350,000 teachers on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) payroll, has set a deadline of December 31, 2023, for teachers to update their dependents’ lists. Dependants include immediate family members such as spouses and children, with coverage for up to four children. Teachers can log in to the portal to add or remove dependants.
However, the scheme faces potential contract termination due to poor services. Lawmakers, particularly members of the education committee, have expressed dissatisfaction with the Sh53 billion medical cover, citing instances where teachers faced challenges, including out-of-pocket expenses, denial of medical services, and delayed discharge from hospitals. MPs raised concerns about the Sh100 co-pay per outpatient visit, alleging that the service provider benefits significantly from approximately 3 million annual visits made by teachers.
During a meeting with AON Minet officials, lawmakers demanded an explanation for the alleged shortcomings and called for the termination of the contract. The CEO of AON Minet acknowledged delays in service but attributed them to fraud detection measures, lack of disclosure by doctors, and delays in document submission. Despite the CEO’s claims, lawmakers insisted on terminating the contract, expressing the need to find a more suitable provider for teachers’ medical coverage. The CEO also mentioned that the Sh100 co-pay had been abolished from July 1.
