Kenya’s New Funding Model (NFM): Student-Centered Financial Support for Higher Education”
President William Ruto has introduced the New Funding Model (NFM) to address financial challenges faced by students entering universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Kenya. The NFM is centered around the needs of students and aims to provide financial assistance based on their demonstrated level of need. The focus is on individuals who have received placement letters from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). Notably, students from vulnerable and extremely needy households will receive full funding, while those categorized as needy and less needy will benefit from 93% government funding, with the remaining 7% designated for tuition fees.
The NFM represents a shift from uniform awards to a more targeted scholarship application process that accommodates students from all economic backgrounds, including those from affluent households. This approach ensures a needs-based distribution of financial assistance on a semester basis. To enroll in the program, applicants need to follow a straightforward process through the provided online portal, which includes confirming their National Identity Card (ID) or using their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) index number, providing a valid email address, and activating the link sent for verification. The system aims to enhance accessibility and transparency in the application process.
This initiative reflects a strategic and inclusive approach to addressing financial constraints for students, directing support to where it is most needed. By implementing a more personalized and needs-based distribution system, the NFM aims to streamline the application process, making it more accessible and transparent for students seeking financial assistance for their education.
