TSC to Enhance Junior Secondary School Teachers’ Skills in CBC & CBA Training – April 2025

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a comprehensive retooling program for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). This initiative, scheduled from April 16th to April 25th, 2025, aims to strengthen educators’ proficiency in implementing CBC and CBA across various subjects, including Languages, Science, Mathematics, Humanities, and Technical studies.

Training Framework & Execution

The retooling program will adopt a smart cascade model, integrating face-to-face training with continuous professional support. Training sessions will take place at designated county venues, grouping teachers by subject for both Special Needs Education (SNE) and regular school categories.

Training Phases

  1. Master Trainers Workshop (April 9-11, 2025)
    • Venue: Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)
    • Participants: Senior officers from TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MOE, KISE, and TTCs
  2. Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) Training (April 16-18, 2025)
    • Venue: Selected county training centers
    • Participants: Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Sub-County Directors, MOE Quality Assurance Officers, and champion teachers
  3. Coordination & Zonal Planning (April 19, 2025)
    • Venue: County/Sub-County offices
    • Participants: Master Trainers, ToTs, County Directors
  4. Teacher Retooling Sessions (April 21-25, 2025)
    • Venue: Designated county training venues
    • Participants: JSS teachers specializing in various subjects (Regular and SNE)

Training Approach & Logistics

  • The training will be implemented using a multi-agency strategy.
  • Master Trainers will conduct a three-day preparatory session for Trainers of Trainers (ToTs).
  • ToTs will then facilitate five-day in-person training sessions for JSS teachers.
  • Master Trainers will provide ongoing professional guidance throughout the program.
  • The training will be residential for ASAL and SNE teachers, while non-residential for others.
  • Training venues include Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and selected county training locations.

Eligible Participants

The retooling initiative is targeted at teachers recruited in November/December 2024 for Junior Secondary Schools (Regular & SNE) and Pre-Vocational Education. Educators will be grouped according to their teaching subjects, including:

  • Languages: English, Kiswahili, Kenya Sign Language (KSL)
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education
  • Social Studies (including Life Skills Education)
  • Integrated Science (Health Education)
  • Pre-technical Studies, Agriculture, and Nutrition
  • Creative Arts and Sports

Responsibilities of Regional & County Directors

TSC has issued an internal directive instructing Regional and County Directors to:

  • Oversee and coordinate the training process.
  • Ensure separate venues for Regular and SNE teacher training.
  • Identify and officially invite participants as per the provided guidelines.

This strategic training initiative is set to enhance the capacity of Junior Secondary teachers in executing CBC and CBA efficiently, ultimately improving learning outcomes for students nationwide.
