Butula MP Joseph Oyula Urges Parental Involvement to Curb School Unrest and Substance Abuse

Butula MP Joseph Oyula has urged parents to take an active role in their children’s lives to curb rising cases of school unrest and substance abuse. He emphasized that responsible parenting is key to molding disciplined and academically successful students.
The legislator made these remarks while handing over two newly constructed classrooms at Dadira Comprehensive School in Butula Sub-County, Busia County. The classrooms, built under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NGCDF), will accommodate Grade 9 learners in support of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) implementation.
Call for Responsible Parenting
“A good parent must create adequate opportunities to monitor, nurture, and groom their children into responsible citizens. This is the only way we will mitigate cases of child neglect in Busia,” said Oyula.
He also emphasized the need for parents to ensure timely payment of school fees to support smooth school operations.
“The bursary from the government is only meant to supplement parents’ efforts. We must take responsibility for our children’s education by paying school fees and actively monitoring their academic progress,” he added.
Support for CBC Implementation
Oyula highlighted that the CBC model requires a collaborative and communal approach in raising children. He encouraged parents to dedicate more time to their children instead of delegating responsibilities to house managers.
“I urge you, parents, to be present in your children’s lives. Support and assist them without entirely delegating your responsibilities to house helps,” he noted.
Call for Student Responsibility
The MP also warned students against peer pressure and substance abuse, urging them to focus on their academics.
“Students must give value for the money invested in their education by excelling academically and staying away from negative influences,” Oyula cautioned.
Parental and Community Acknowledgment
Parents, led by Resilla Rabongo and Simon Musungu, commended the MP for his dedication to improving education in Butula through enhanced infrastructure and education schemes.
“We appreciate MP Oyula’s commitment to the education of our children in the sub-county. Under his tenure, we have witnessed remarkable improvements in school infrastructure and academic performance over the past 10 years,” said Musungu.
They also called on fellow parents to instill discipline and good moral values in children for better performance and the development of future leaders with integrity.
“Discipline and academic success go hand in hand. We must guide our children appropriately if we want to shape a generation of ethical leaders,” said Rabongo.
The MP’s continued efforts to enhance education through parental engagement, infrastructure development, and CBC implementation are expected to have a lasting impact on learners in Busia County.
