Fatal Accident: Chavakali Boys’ School Bus Overturns on Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, Resulting in Student Fatality
On Monday night, tragedy struck as a bus carrying students from Chavakali High School overturned on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old student. The unfortunate incident occurred at the Coptic Church roundabout while the students were en route to Nairobi aboard an Easy Coach bus.
Kisumu Central Police Commander Peter Mulai confirmed the accident, urging motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area, which has been identified as a black spot. According to Mulai, the heavy rains caused the bus to lose control, veer off the road, and collide with a crash barrier before overturning.
The aftermath of the accident left 32 students injured, who were promptly taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for medical attention. Additionally, two students sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Avenue Hospital for further treatment.
Despite the thorough investigation, the driver of the bus was nowhere to be found at the scene of the accident. Consequently, the bus was towed to Kondele Police Station for further examination and assessment.
Mulai revealed that the bus was transporting a total of 34 students who were heading to Nairobi for the first term holidays following the closure of the school term. Tragically, the body of the deceased student was transported to the JOOTRH morgue, where it awaits autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
