KUPPET Calls for Enhanced Mental Health Support for Teachers by TSC
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has raised urgent concerns about the escalating mental health challenges faced by teachers nationwide. Mary Rotich, Executive Secretary of KUPPET’s Kericho branch, highlighted the alarming prevalence of mental health issues within the teaching community. She emphasized the critical need for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to implement measures ensuring easier access to counseling services for teachers.
Shortage of Mental Health Professionals
In Kericho town, Rotich underscored the detrimental impact of a shortage of psychiatrists and mental health experts on the delivery of essential health services. She called for increased awareness programs and advocated for the empowerment of Aon Minet-accredited facilities across the country. Rotich emphasized the importance of enhancing these facilities to provide quality and accessible mental health services to teachers facing challenges such as gambling and family issues, which contribute to depression.
Need for Regular Mental Health Check-Ups
KUPPET also emphasized the necessity of regular mental health check-ups for teachers, highlighting the crucial role of ongoing care and support. According to Rotich, the severity of mental health issues is starkly illustrated by the tragic loss of seven teachers in Kericho County to suicide since the beginning of the year. Many others are undergoing treatment in various health facilities due to mental health challenges, underscoring the urgency of proactive mental health management and support systems.
