Mathematics Now Mandatory in All CBC Senior School Pathways, Confirms Education CS Migos

Nairobi — In a decisive move to strengthen foundational skills among Kenyan learners, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Migos has confirmed that Mathematics will be a mandatory subject in all three senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Speaking on Tuesday, CS Migos stated that the decision followed thorough consultations and overwhelming support from stakeholders during the recent CBC dialogue sessions.
“Most of the stakeholders during the CBC dialogue believed that Mathematics should be mandatory in senior school,” said CS Migos. “We have heeded your concerns, consulted with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and come to an agreement that some form of Mathematics be mandated for the other two pathways that are not STEM.”
A Shift in Curriculum Policy
Until now, Mathematics has been a core subject only in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) pathway. However, under the revised framework, it will now also be required in:
- Social Sciences
- Arts and Sports Science
The inclusion is expected to ensure uniform development of critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities—skills increasingly vital in the evolving job market and daily life.
Implementation Details to Follow
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) will soon release additional guidelines and curriculum adjustments to support this implementation in the non-STEM pathways.
This development aligns with national goals to equip all learners with strong numeracy and logical reasoning, regardless of their area of specialization.
