Nyamira County Set to Establish its First University
The long-awaited dream of Nyamira residents to establish their own chartered university is about to become a reality.
Under the leadership of Prof. Christopher Ngacho from Kisii University, a team has evaluated eight potential locations for the prospective university as part of a feasibility assessment. The detailed report outlining the suitability of each site will soon be presented to the Nyamira County leadership.
Prof. Ngacho provided insights into the assessment process, stating, “We visited eight sites proposed by Nyamira’s leadership, including Kiabonyoru, Ekerubo Gietai, Sere, Senator Kebaso Primary School, Riakimai, Kiabonyoru High School, Simbauti, and Sengera Manga. We will present a comprehensive report on our findings to both the Kisii University Senate and the county leadership to determine the suitable location for the university.”
Acknowledging the smooth execution of the assessment, Prof. Ngacho praised the commitment and support of Nyamira County’s leadership, highlighting their enthusiasm for establishing a university in the region. Governor Amos Nyaribo congratulated the team for their efficient assessment, highlighting the anticipation within the Nyamira leadership and community for the university’s inauguration.
One of the main requirements for establishing the university is the availability of spacious land, not less than 20 hectares, owned either on freehold or leasehold terms of at least 45 years at the time of granting a letter of interim authority or constituent college status. Additionally, the institution must have a master plan guiding land use. Nyamira residents eagerly await the establishment of their own institution of higher learning, recognizing its potential for academic, economic, infrastructure, and other developmental growth. This initiative aims to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking services at the upcoming institution of higher learning.
