President William Ruto has generously donated Sh2 million to offer assistance to the families affected by the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 11 students from Kenyatta University. The announcement of the President’s donation was made by First Lady Rachel Ruto during the memorial service held at Kenyatta University on Sunday.
Expressing her condolences, the First Lady emphasized the profound loss experienced by the families, describing the departed students as not just learners but as bright individuals with promising futures. She underscored their significance as beacons of hope and sources of pride for their families, emphasizing the immense tragedy of their untimely passing.
The fatal accident occurred at Maungu on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on March 19, 2014, resulting in the loss of 11 lives and leaving 46 students injured. Mrs. Ruto urged all motorists to exercise caution and diligence on the roads, emphasizing the critical role of vigilance and courtesy in preventing such tragedies in the future.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu also extended his condolences, highlighting the gravity of the accident and stressing the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures. He lamented the loss of young lives and called for collective efforts to promote responsible road user behavior, citing avoidable accidents as a significant concern.
Secretary Machogu affirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to supporting the university and the injured victims receiving medical treatment. He reassured those hospitalized of the government’s assistance and urged them to remain resilient during their recovery process.
Meanwhile, Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Paul Wainaina, appealed for solidarity and assistance for the survivors of the accident, noting that 15 students are still undergoing treatment in hospitals. He emphasized the importance of rallying support for both the families of the deceased and the recovering students, highlighting the ongoing need for compassion and assistance during this challenging time.
