Trans Nzoia County Boosts Tvet To Empower Youth With Technical Skills

Trans Nzoia County is ramping up its commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), aiming to empower the youth with essential technical skills for self-employment and economic independence.

Investment in Infrastructure

At the Kitale Technical and Vocational Education Training Centre, Trans Nzoia County TVET Director Eliud Lusweti revealed that Sh45 million has been allocated to refurbish TVET institutions. Lusweti emphasized that upgrading these facilities is pivotal for equipping out-of-school youth with practical skills, fostering self-reliance, and creating sustainable livelihoods.

Key Partnership for Equipment

In a landmark development, Lusweti announced a partnership with Tools to Work, a Polish organization, to provide training tools and equipment to over 32 TVET institutions in the county for the next five years. This initiative aims to address the chronic shortage of equipment that has hampered training efforts, ensuring that students have access to the resources they need to succeed.

Enrollment Challenges and Call to Action

Despite these advancements, Lusweti noted low enrollment in technical courses as a significant challenge. He urged parents and youth to embrace TVET, emphasizing that skills training offers a sustainable foundation for global job market competitiveness.

To further support graduates, the county has pledged to provide startup kits, enabling them to transition smoothly into self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Support from Stakeholders

Kitale Vocational Training Centre Manager, Beatrice Baraza, lauded the efforts of Child Rescue Kenya Organisation in empowering vulnerable youth and young mothers through TVET programs. She highlighted the success of many graduates who have established their own businesses, attributing their achievements to the quality training provided by these initiatives.

Baraza also encouraged graduates to register for National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exams, emphasizing that certification enhances skills and opens doors to advanced qualifications. She expressed pride in the graduates’ accomplishments and urged them to pursue continuous professional growth.

Looking Ahead

With strategic investments, partnerships, and community engagement, Trans Nzoia County is positioning TVET as a cornerstone for youth empowerment. By addressing challenges and equipping institutions, the county aims to transform lives, boost self-employment, and drive economic growth through skilled labor.
