The Departmental Committee on Education of the National Assembly embarked on a comprehensive tour of various Public Universities to assess the progress of projects funded in the 2023/2024 budgetary allocation.
Under the leadership of Julius Melly, the Member of Parliament for Tindiret and Chairperson of the Committee, a delegation from Central Kenya spearheaded the initiative. Their primary objective was to gain insights into the obstacles hindering project implementation within these institutions, with a view to implementing corrective measures.
During the deliberations, the committee focused on evaluating the efficacy of the recently introduced university funding model and exploring avenues for collaboration between universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training Institutions (TVETs), among other pertinent areas of concern.
Melly emphasized the importance of these site visits in providing firsthand information to guide the Committee’s future discussions with the Ministry and the State Department for Higher Education. These discussions particularly aimed at addressing funding issues for stalled projects and those nearing completion.
Expressing the significance of the visits, Melly highlighted, “This is crucial as it allows us to physically inspect the progress of construction works on these projects.”
Furthermore, university management officials presented data pertaining to student admissions and highlighted challenges encountered, especially regarding fee payments under the new funding model.
