KCA University has launched the inaugural Learning and Design Lab as part of the UK-Kenya University Partnerships initiative aimed at tackling climate change challenges. In collaboration with the British Council, this pioneering program, under the Going Global partnerships, brings together universities from the UK and Kenya along with industry partners to address climate resilience issues through collaborative efforts.
Participating universities include Rongo University, Nottingham University Business School, KCA University, University of Portsmouth, Strathmore University, and Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. KCA University has secured Ksh6 million for its involvement in the program.
The first 5-day Learning and Design Lab, held in Nairobi, brings together 20 students from KCA University and Nottingham University Business School to co-create human-centered solutions for specific climate challenges posed by industry partners. Through interactive workshops, participants engage in hands-on learning experiences to drive meaningful impact.
Prof Isaiah Wakindiki, the Vice Chancellor and CEO of KCA University, highlights the program’s focus on developing innovative solutions for climate resilience through a student exchange initiative. He emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the empowerment of students with innovative problem-solving methods.
The partnership provides students with immersive experiences, allowing them to tackle real-world challenges and gain practical knowledge before entering the workforce or entrepreneurship. It also benefits UK universities by offering their students exposure to a new context and hands-on collaboration with Kenyan counterparts.
Moreover, the program aims to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in universities by fostering deeper engagement between higher education institutions and industry stakeholders. Industry partners, including Chemolex, Greenspoon, and Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment, will explore challenges and opportunities for innovation and product/service development.
The British Council has appointed Circle Innovation to facilitate the Learning and Design Labs, leveraging their expertise in innovation practices across the region.
