Infinix, UNESCO, Google, and University of Nairobi Host Largest CogLabs Innovation Workshop

Infinix, in collaboration with UNESCO, Google, and the University of Nairobi, has successfully hosted the largest CogLabs innovation and learning workshop. The one-day event, themed “Get in Now,” took place on Friday and brought together 200 students who were equipped with skills in Artificial Intelligence and robotics.

Empowering the Next Generation

CogLabs aims to prepare and equip the next generation with experiences in robotics, machine learning, and AI, ensuring their careers are set for the future. The project seeks to bridge the AI and robotics gap and make these fields fun and accessible for young people. During the workshop, participants learned how to design and build robots with 3D-printed parts, utilizing second-hand phones and basic electronics. They also received training on programming the robots to recognize images, sounds, and poses to perform simple tasks.

Revamping STEM Education

UoN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama described the workshop as a key milestone towards revamping STEM education in Kenya. In a speech read by UoN Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi, Prof. Kiama noted that many students find STEM subjects challenging due to misconceptions about their complexity and perceived gender biases. He emphasized the importance of the CogLabs workshop as a threshold for future innovators, with the objective of producing graduates who are not just job seekers but also innovators and entrepreneurs.

Building Capacity in Key Areas

Infinix Kenya Brand Manager Michael Zeng highlighted the project’s focus on enhancing capacity building in robotics, machine learning, and AI. Joan Nadal, Master Trainer of UNESCO at STEM Education, echoed this sentiment, stating that the project aims to empower the next generation to embrace AI and robotics. Nadal emphasized the need to provide hands-on tools and resources to spark curiosity and arm young learners with relevant practical skills for the digital age.

Making AI Accessible

John Kimani, the head of developer relations for Sub-Saharan Africa at Google, noted that their mobile application, developed by Google, aligns with CogLabs’ mission. He explained that the app enables users to experiment with machine learning and programming without needing a laptop, allowing anyone to create robotic wonders.

Future Plans for CogLabs Workshops

Infinix plans to establish more CogLabs Workshops across Africa, providing students with practical learning activities. These workshops will integrate 3D printing, robot making, and basic programming knowledge to empower youth to explore advanced technologies and promote sustainable development.
