TSC Confirms 46,000 Intern Teachers to Permanent and Pensionable Terms
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms starting January 2025. This marks the largest conversion of intern teachers in Kenya’s history. The teachers, who served under internship for over a year, have received their employment letters, ensuring better salaries, comprehensive benefits like medical cover, loans, and leave entitlements.
Key details include:
- Employment Scale: The newly confirmed teachers include 21,550 junior secondary, 4,000 primary school, and 450 secondary school teachers recruited at different times in 2023.
- Salary Adjustments: Primary school teachers will now earn KSh 32,000 net (up from KSh 13,000), while graduate secondary school teachers will earn KSh 47,000 net (up from KSh 17,000).
- Recruitment Process: TSC prioritized intern teachers during the hiring process, awarding them 50 marks on the recruitment scoresheet, significantly boosting their chances over non-intern applicants.
- Future Plans: TSC plans to recruit an additional 20,000 teachers on internship terms to support junior secondary learning from January 2025.
This initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government agenda, which has seen 56,000 teachers employed on PnP terms since 2022.
