Mount Kenya University (MKU) has introduced cutting-edge gaming equipment to facilitate student engagement in Electronic Sports (E-Sports), promoting innovation and technology for holistic student development.
MKU Board Chairman Prof Simon Gicharu generously donated the equipment, underscoring his commitment to fostering talent and preparing students for the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Recognizing the potential of e-sports, Prof Gicharu emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive environment in Kenyan universities that nurtures talent and empowers students. He highlighted the numerous benefits and opportunities that e-sports offers for students, universities, and corporations alike.
The growth of e-sports in Kenya has been driven by factors such as widespread high-speed internet availability, affordable gaming hardware, and the chance to connect and compete with gamers from around the globe.
Prof Gicharu highlighted how the creative economy seamlessly combines art, technology, and storytelling to create an engaging and entertaining experience.
As a result, the MKU Esports management team has initiated a recruitment drive for the upcoming season, actively seeking talented individuals in popular games such as Tekken, NBA2K, and FIFA.
Kenya made its debut in the Global Esports Games held in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2022. The country’s top gamers competed against other African nations and the world’s best players, showcasing Kenya’s growing presence in the e-sports arena.
During the 12th edition of the Eastern Africa Universities games held at Ndejje University, Uganda, in December 2022, MKU secured the eighth position in the Eastern African games category.
With these exciting developments, Mount Kenya University is embracing the realm of e-sports and providing students with the opportunity to explore their gaming talents while nurturing their overall growth.
