The event took place at the Kangundo DEB Primary School grounds and saw the presence of several notable figures, including Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, AK Vice President Mr. Paul Mutwii, Veteran Athlete Patrick Makau, Kangundo Central Ward MCA Kavaa, and Mitaboni counterpart Fredrick Muthoka, alongside other dignitaries. Addressing the attendees, Deputy Governor Mwangangi highlighted athletics as a means of generating income, promoting fitness, and steering young children away from negative behaviors such as drug abuse.

Emphasizing the county government’s commitment to sports, Mwangangi cited the recent Governor’s Cup Football Championship, which attracted numerous teams from across the County, as just the beginning. Representing the Governor at the Education Run, Mwangangi pledged that the county administration would sponsor athletic championships in the future to harness the considerable potential among the region’s youth.

Mwangangi expressed confidence that with appropriate structures in place, the youth in the region could compete on par with the Rift Valley region, known for its dominance in Athletics. “I assure you the County Government of Machakos is very serious about sports. The Governor’s Cup Football Championship was just the beginning. We will soon sponsor athletics and other ball games,” stated Mwangangi.

Additionally, Mwangangi conveyed best wishes from Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who is currently on a working tour in the US. He noted that sports also played a vital role in reducing the rate of crime in the region, highlighting its broader impact beyond mere athletic competition.
