Mount Kenya University (MKU) made an announcement on April 1 regarding its inaugural nursing cohort being sent to Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Germany.
The cohort consists of five nursing apprentices: Gekonge Mogambi, Aisha Wacuka, Hellen Okwaro, Bonciana Chepkorir, and Teresia Muthoni. These individuals were provided with necessary documentation and air tickets, which were funded by Caritas Hospital, one of the partner institutions in Germany.
According to MKU’s official media, the beneficiaries of the project have received full sponsorship from German-accredited partner hospitals. This sponsorship includes work permits, visas, work contracts, and air tickets to commence their paid apprenticeship.
The pilot cohort successfully attained proficiency level B2 in the German language and completed a preparatory course. This achievement paved the way for their participation in the apprenticeship program.
MKU established a memorandum of understanding with a university in Germany, enabling its graduates to access training and employment opportunities in the European country.
This program aligns with an agreement between President William Ruto and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, aimed at providing 250,000 job opportunities in Germany for Kenyans. The agreement was made during Chancellor Scholz’s visit to Kenya in May 2023.
The vice-chancellor of MKU emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting the President’s initiative and increasing opportunities for Kenyans abroad.
MKU also maintains a similar partnership with Lebenshifle Tirol of Austria, enabling nursing graduates from Kenyan universities to work in Austria. The university anticipates sending 60 nursing graduates to Austria as part of this collaboration.
