Government implements RPL as it commits to issuing certificates to skilled youth

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is being implemented by the government as it commits to awarding certificates to individuals with technical skills, regardless of their educational background.

Dr. Esther Muoria, the Principal Secretary (PS) for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET), emphasized that this initiative aims to assist artisans in securing employment opportunities in both government and private sectors, irrespective of their academic qualifications.

The government’s policy shift towards promoting artisan jobs reflects a bottom-up approach aimed at providing thousands of young people with livelihood opportunities.

Dr. Muoria highlighted the significance of recognizing skilled youth across the country who contribute diligently and efficiently in various skilled occupations. Certificates will be issued to them, enabling them to benefit from government programs such as skilled labor exportation.

Accompanied by Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, Dr. Muoria made these remarks during a graduation ceremony at the Thika Technical Training Institute (TTI), where over 3,000 trainees were awarded certificates.

Additionally, Dr. Muoria announced plans to establish a new technical training college in Thika to alleviate congestion at existing facilities. The new institution will provide more opportunities for technical training, addressing the needs of the over 16,000 students currently enrolled.

The PS emphasized the importance of linking Kenyan skilled workers with employers in the global labor market, highlighting skilled workers as essential contributors to economic growth and national development.

MP Alice Ng’ang’a expressed her commitment to establishing the new college, named Makongeni Technical Institute, and acknowledged the support received from the PS.

Earlier plans to establish the institution, fully funded by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), were announced by the MP, indicating its location on a 100-acre piece of land provided by Del Monte Kenya Limited.
