Heavy Rains Force Closure of Narok School as Classroom Roofs are Torn Off
Following the impact of heavy rains and strong winds, a significant portion of St. Peter’s Primary School in Narok town has been temporarily closed on the directive of County Director of Education (CDE) Apollo Apuko. The closure aims to address safety concerns and repair the damage caused by the roofs being blown off several classrooms.
CDE Apuko, in consultation with the Headteacher and Board of Management (BoM), made the decision to temporarily shut down the school until necessary repairs are completed. The primary focus is on ensuring the safety of the students before resuming regular learning activities.
Additionally, Apuko has called for a meeting with parents scheduled for Tuesday, aiming to engage in discussions on the most effective and swift way to address the aftermath of the weather-related incident.
Witness William Nkuruna described the severity of the situation, highlighting that the strong winds, accompanied by heavy rains, not only tore off the roofs of classrooms but also left electric cables hanging and nearly destroyed learning materials. The storm also uprooted more than 20 trees within the school compound, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the institution.
In response to the urgent need for assistance, local residents are appealing to both the county and national governments, as well as well-wishers, to contribute to the rebuilding efforts of St. Peter’s Primary School. The collective goal is to expedite the reconstruction process and ensure that students can resume their studies as soon as possible.
It is important to note that the region experienced heavy rains on Saturday, contributing to the flooding of Narok town and causing disruptions, including the temporary closure of the Nairobi-Narok-Bomet highway for a significant part of the day.
