Teachers who were interviewed for promotion in December are set to receive news about the outcome of their applications this week.

This week, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia announced that over 36,000 teachers who applied and interviewed for promotions last year will finally receive news about the outcome of their applications. The promotions cover various levels, including primary, secondary, and teacher training colleges, addressing the concerns of teachers who have remained in the same job group for an extended period.

After undergoing interviews in December last year, there were concerns about the delayed promotions and a lack of proactive communication from TSC regarding the challenges they were facing. However, an explanation was provided recently, citing the large number of teachers in the shortlist—over 30,000—which contributed to the extended processing time.

Macharia also shared plans for the recruitment of 20,000 more teachers in the next financial year. An additional 6,000 positions will be advertised this financial year following a one-billion-shilling allocation for teacher promotions. The 46,000 teachers currently on contract will be converted to permanent and pensionable terms after completing two years, with an additional 20,000 teachers set to be recruited on contract this year.

Addressing the media in Nairobi, Macharia discussed the amendments to the law outlined in the TSC Amendment Bill (2024). She mentioned ongoing engagement with stakeholders in the sector before taking the Bill to Parliament. Teacher unions, such as Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), applauded the move, considering it long overdue. KNUT’s Collins Oyuu emphasized the need for the TSC to pay the promoted teachers arrears from the time they qualified for promotion.
