Tragic Drowning Incident at MMUST: Third-Year Student Loses Life in River Isiukhu

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is in mourning following the untimely death of Simon Mogendi, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education Arts, majoring in History and Kiswahili. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, January 19, when Mogendi drowned while swimming in River Isiukhu near Kakamega town.

Mogendi, a native of Kisii County, had ventured to the river in the company of two friends for a leisurely swim. Witness accounts reveal that before entering the water, Mogendi requested his friends to take a photo of him. Sadly, he was overwhelmed by the deep currents and drowned.

Efforts to recover his body were undertaken by a joint team consisting of Red Cross personnel, Kakamega County rescue officials, and local divers. His remains were subsequently transported to Kakamega mortuary for examination and preservation.

Local elders have long regarded the section of River Isiukhu where Mogendi drowned as a perilous zone. According to community legends, the area is believed to be cursed, with tales of an elephant having perished there years ago, reinforcing fears of its dangers.

The university community, friends, and family are grappling with the loss, as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

MMUST urges students to exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities and to be mindful of their safety in unfamiliar environments.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the late Simon Mogendi during this difficult time.
