Attractive Opportunities Unveiled: TSC Tempts Intern Teachers with Approval of Four Leaves, Packed with Benefits
Intern teachers assigned to primary, junior, and secondary schools can now enjoy approved leaves, courtesy of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). In contrast to their permanent and pensionable counterparts who have access to nine leaves, contracted teachers typically have limitations on leave entitlement.
The approved leaves for TSC teachers on permanent terms include Sick Leave, Annual Leave, Compassionate Leave, Paternity Leave, Maternity Leave, Study Leave, Special Leave, Adoption Leave, and Spouse of Diplomat Leave. However, intern teachers now benefit from four specific leaves, each requiring a written application for approval.
1) Sick Leave:
Intern teachers are eligible for a sick leave of up to 90 days, inclusive of weekends and holidays. The application is submitted to the sub-county director through the head of the institution, accompanied by relevant medical documents. Sick leave is granted for a maximum of one month with full pay, followed by one month on half pay if the sickness persists beyond the first month. If the sickness extends beyond two months, leave is without pay until the teacher resumes duty.
2) Maternity Leave:
Female intern teachers are entitled to a maximum of 90 days maternity leave with full pay, which includes weekends and holidays. A written application with relevant medical documents is submitted to the sub-county director through the head of the institution. The teacher should provide at least three months’ notice, accompanied by a letter from a registered medical practitioner indicating the expected date of delivery.
3) Paternity Leave:
Male intern teachers can take up to 14 days of paternity leave with full pay, including weekends and holidays. The application, along with supporting documents (e.g., birth notification), is forwarded to the sub-county director through the head of the institution.
4) Compassionate Leave:
Intern teachers facing distressing situations, such as a serious illness, family burial, land dispute, flood, or fire at home, can apply for compassionate leave. This leave is capped at 14 days with full pay, inclusive of weekends and holidays. The application process involves submitting a request to the sub-county director through the headteacher.
