Following a surge in cyberattacks in Kenya, attributed to widespread tech job layoffs, corporates have been urged to channel hackers’ skills into positive contributions by creating cybersecurity opportunities for them.
As cyberattacks and ransomware incidents rise, institutions are struggling with financial losses, reputational damage, regulatory non-compliance, and identity theft. This has heightened the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect systems and customer data.
Addressing the Root Cause of Cyberattacks
According to Michael Mugo, Principal Officer at CIC Microinsurance—CIC Group, the lack of employment opportunities for young tech professionals is fueling cybercrime, severely impacting Kenya’s digital infrastructure.
Speaking at Zetech University during a Postgraduate Luncheon and the launch of a PhD in Business Administration and Management, Mugo called on corporates to provide alternative opportunities to young people to restore public confidence in cybersecurity.
Leveraging Technology for Transformation
In a rapidly changing world, Mugo emphasized the importance of leveraging relationships, technology, and research partnerships to drive impactful leadership.
“It is crucial as a nation to tap into the potential of young people and transform their skills into something beneficial, ensuring that our corporations thrive,” he stated.
“We must embrace technology to create opportunities that drive Kenya forward. By building relationships, strengthening networks, and fostering partnerships in research, we can make a lasting impact as thought leaders in the ever-evolving 21st century,” added Mugo.
As Kenya continues to experience digital transformation, businesses are encouraged to shift their approach, offering ethical hacking programs and cybersecurity roles to prevent malicious attacks while fostering a secure digital ecosystem.
