56,000 Junior Secondary School Teachers to Undergo Competency-Based Curriculum Training

56,000 Junior Secondary School Teachers to Undergo Competency-Based Curriculum Training

The training initiative, lauded by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, acknowledges the dedication of teachers already engaged in CBC compliance alongside their regular school responsibilities. Macharia expressed her appreciation during the World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

However, it’s worth noting that this retooling effort exclusively targets newly appointed junior secondary school teachers and not those transitioning from primary schools. A memo issued on September 26th to TSC Regional and County Directors outlined the subjects, including language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects, for which teachers will receive training. The training sessions will be conducted in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and various selected county venues.

The Grade 7 teacher training is scheduled to occur from October 9th to 13th, 2023, with earlier training sessions for Master Trainers and Trainer of Trainers (TOTs) already underway. Master Trainers, representing institutions such as TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MOE, KISE, and TTCs, commenced their training from October 2nd to 4th at the Kenya Institute of Special Education. These Master Trainers will subsequently impart their knowledge to the TOTs, covering both Special Needs Education (SNE) and regular education.

The TOTs’ training is set to take place from October 6th to 7th, with sessions conducted in Teacher Training Colleges and other selected county venues. TOTs include Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Subcounty Directors, and Ministry of Education quality assurance officers. All training sessions are planned to be conducted face-to-face.

This extensive teacher training effort comes on the heels of the TSC’s deployment of 18,000 intern teachers to junior secondary schools in late August and early September. Concurrently, Grade 7 learners are preparing for their national writing assessments in October. Knec (Kenya National Examinations Council) has already released the assessment materials, enabling schools to download, print, and administer the assessments to learners. The assessments will run from October 2nd to October 26th, 2023, covering a range of compulsory and optional subjects with written exams, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Agriculture, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, CRE/IRE/HRE, Science and Technology, Kenyan Sign Language, Integrated Science, Computer Studies, Business Studies, Life Skills Education, Pre-Technical, and Pre-Career Education.
